Home Cleaning Tips - How to Clean Mold

Millie Kwan - Thursday, January 29, 2015

Home cleaning takes on an entirely new meaning when there is mold present. Whether this is as a result of a plumbing leak or has simply come about because of an opening to the outside, mold can be devastating in a lot of ways if you do not clean it up properly. There are also potential hazards that can come from attempting to clean up mold by doing so improperly. Fortunately, this is one part of home cleaning that you can do with relative ease.

Stop the Source of the Problem

The first step is always to eliminate the source of the problem. If there is any way that more water can get to the area, stop this at once. If there is a leak, patch it promptly and thoroughly. There is no sense cleaning up the existing mold just to have it reappear in a month or so.

Products and Safety Precautions

Contrary to what a lot of people believe, using bleach to clean up mold is not the best solution to this problem. In a lot of cases, there are specialized chemicals that will work better. In other cases, alternative types of chemicals such as tea tree oil, ammonia or vinegar can also work well. This generally depends on how bad the mold has gotten.

In some cases, cleansing a moldy area with baking soda or grapefruit seed extract is a great way to both moisten it enough to not have to breathe in the mold and to freshen up the scent. Even when mold is moist with whatever cleaning solution you use, it is still advisable to wear a mask to protect your lungs. Wearing rubber gloves can also be a good idea if you have sensitive skin.

Scrubbing and Removing

There are times when you can simply scrub out the area and times when you have to actually replace some things. For the most part, if mold is just sitting on the surface somewhere in your home, you can scrub it out and everything will be fine. But if there is weakness in wood or drywall, you may have to rip out and replace the parts that are damaged. If there is mold inside the drywall or floor, scrubbing the surface will not take care of it. You may even find an additional cause of the mold that you did not originally see to deal with.

A clean living environment is critical to a healthy life. If you are too busy to clean your home regularly, consider hiring housecleaning services. It is well worth it!
